Drink orange juice to prevent a charley horse.


A leg spasm, or charley horse, has many causes including dehydration, and low levels of potassium or calcium. You can combat all three with a glass of calcium-fortified orange juice or milk.

Other good sources of both calcium and potassium include yogurt, soybeans, white beans, beet greens and spinach. Most dairy products are high in calcium while potatoes, bananas and most tomato products are high in potassium. Any non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic drink can help you stay hydrated (water being the best choice).

Muscle spasms can happen in any area of the body, but are most common in the legs. They can also be caused by muscle overuse or injury, nerve problems or stress. If spasms continue or repeat often, talk to your doctor.
