HACK BUSTER: Don’t Give Up OJ, Just Chill.
If you are prone to frequent heartburn or stomach upset, you may have been advised to stop drinking orange juice. But we’re busting that hack since there is a way you may be able to enjoy your juice heartburn free!
Orange juice is very acidic. There’s a reason why stomach remedies are called antacids—because when acid builds up in your stomach it can cause, pain, bloating, heartburn, gas and more. The antacids relieve symptoms by restoring the acid-base balance in your stomach.
But here’s the thing about orange juice – the colder you keep it, the less acidic it is. People have different levels of sensitivity to the acids in orange juice. If you are highly sensitive then drinking it, keeping it colder probably won’t help. But if OJ bothers you sometimes and not others, consider whether the temperature of your drink may play a role.
If keeping your orange juice cold helps you, try it with some other acidic fruits or vegetables, including tomatoes, pineapple, grapefruit, lemons, limes and foods made with vinegar. Drinking juice cold has the added benefit of making the vitamin C in it more available to the body. Juices stored at room temperature can lose some of their vitamin C.
If you have been diagnosed with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or advised to avoid orange juice for other reasons, talk to your doctor before adding it back to your diet.
