Save your own life: What to do if you are choking and alone.
If you are alone and choking, seconds count. Call 9-1-1 immediately and make noise even if you cannot speak.
Your body’s first instinct may be to cough. That might help dislodge whatever is choking you. If not, try to perform abdominal thrusts on yourself.
- Make a fist and place it on your abdomen, just above your belly button (a little higher, closer to the rib cage if you are obese).
- Grab your fist with your other hand and thrust upward sharply several times.
- If you can, push against or bend over something at the same height, like the top of a chair back. You want to create upward pressure on your diaphragm to dislodge the object.
Once the object is out, call your doctor to see if a follow-up appointment or exam is recommended.
