Try ice for toothache relief, but on your hand, not your tooth.

ER & First Aid

How do you keep a toothache from ruining your weekend plans – or when on vacation miles from your dentist? Try rubbing some ice on your hand (not your tooth).

A study showed that massaging the webbing between your thumb and index finger on the same side as the achy tooth can produce a 50 percent reduction of tooth pain. The cold signals in the nerves may disrupt the pain signals the tooth is sending.

So, rub ice there for 5 to 7 minutes to ease up on the tooth pain. But if it continues, you’ll probably want to get to your dentist eventually. If the pain is severe or involved damage to a tooth, your closest HCA emergency room can handle dental emergencies.
